Preserve value: Keep identifiable equipment and unused material intact until it has been reviewed. Cutting, mixing or removing labels can make resale evaluation harder.

Panelboard vs. load center vs. switchboard: what is the difference?

These terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different equipment with different markets. Knowing which one you have helps you describe it accurately when you sell panelboards or related electrical equipment.

Panelboards

Commercial and industrial distribution panels, typically rated from 100 to 1200 amps. Panelboards distribute power to branch circuits through individual breakers mounted on bus bars inside a metal enclosure. They are common in office buildings, factories, schools, hospitals, and retail spaces. When you sell panelboards, the key details are the manufacturer, amperage, voltage, number of circuits, and whether breakers are included.

Load centers

Essentially residential-grade breaker panels, though the term sometimes covers light commercial panels too. Load centers are lower amperage (typically 100 to 225 amps) and are mass-produced for the residential market. Individual used load centers generally have less resale value than commercial panelboards, but new-old-stock or quantity lots can still be worth a review.

Switchboards and switchgear

Larger service-entrance equipment that sits upstream of panelboards in the electrical distribution chain. Switchboards handle higher amperages and often include metering sections. If your project involves switchboards or switchgear alongside panelboards, mention the full scope; larger equipment may justify a site visit or a broader plant closing evaluation. Major panelboard manufacturers we evaluate.

Brand matters in electrical equipment. Established manufacturers have active secondary markets; obsolete or off-brand panels are harder to place. When you sell panelboards, the manufacturer name on the label is one of the first things we look for.

Widely traded brands

  • Square D (Schneider Electric) — QO and Homeline load centers; NQ, NF, and I-Line panelboards. Among the most commonly encountered and widely traded.
  • Eaton / Cutler-Hammer — Pow-R-Line panelboards, CH and BR load centers. Strong secondary market, especially for commercial panelboards.
  • Siemens — P1, P2, and P3 series panelboards. Common in commercial and industrial installations.
  • GE (now ABB) — A-Series and Spectra panelboards. Older GE equipment is frequently encountered in facility upgrades.

Also reviewed

  • Murray (Siemens) — Residential and light commercial panels.
  • ITE / Gould — Older commercial equipment, often found in legacy installations.
  • Zinsco and Federal Pacific — These panels have known safety concerns and limited resale markets, but complete panels may still be reviewed for component or material value. Disclose the brand honestly.
  • New-old-stock, any major brand — Unused panels in original packaging from any recognized manufacturer deserve a careful look.

VALUE FACTORS

What affects the value of used panelboards?

Not every panel is worth the same. These are the factors that separate high-value panels from commodity scrap when you sell panelboards.

Condition and completeness

A complete panel with its cover, deadfront, directory labels, and all breakers installed is far easier to evaluate than a stripped enclosure. Keep panels as intact as possible until they have been reviewed. Missing covers, damaged bus bars, or water exposure reduce value significantly.

Breakers included

The breakers inside a panelboard often represent a large share of its total value. Newer, higher-amperage, or specialty breakers (GFCI, AFCI, shunt trip) add value. A panel full of standard single-pole breakers is worth less than one with larger frame sizes. Do not remove breakers before the initial photo review.

Age and obsolescence

Current-production panelboards from major brands have the strongest resale markets. Older panels may still have value if the breaker line is still manufactured, since replacement breakers keep the installed base alive. Truly obsolete panels with no compatible breaker supply are typically commodity value only.

New-old-stock panels — unused panels still in original packaging — are the strongest candidates for resale value. If you have surplus electrical inventory from a distributor, contractor, or project cancellation, keep it packaged and send photos of the labels. Quantity matters: a pallet of identical new panels is a different opportunity than a single used one.

Before you send the inventory

What nameplate information should I photograph?

Manufacturer, catalog number, voltage, amperage, phase and enclosure information are especially useful. Photograph the full label without glare, then take an overall photo showing the complete panel with its cover on and off if possible.

Should breakers stay installed?

Generally yes for the initial review. A complete panel with identifiable breakers is easier to evaluate than loose pieces with no context. Do not remove breakers, strip interiors, or discard covers before sending photos.

Do you review multiple panels at once?

Yes. Send group photos showing the full lot, then close-ups of representative labels and any higher-value equipment. For large quantities from a demolition, upgrade, or plant closing, an inventory list with quantities speeds up the review.

What is the difference between a panelboard and a load center?

Panelboards are commercial and industrial distribution panels, typically 100 to 1200 amps, while load centers are residential-grade panels, usually 100 to 225 amps. Panelboards from major brands like Square D, Eaton, and Siemens generally have stronger resale markets than residential load centers, though new-old-stock of either type is worth a review.
