Why carbide has recovery value

Tungsten carbide is a dense, engineered material made to cut steel — and recyclers recover the tungsten content from worn tooling. Even inserts and end mills that are completely used up for machining still carry material value, which is why shops collect them instead of throwing them away.

Keep it separate

Carbide mixed with high-speed steel, regular steel or general shop scrap is harder to evaluate and worth less per pound. Collect it right, get more for it

How carbide is collected and stored on the shop floor directly affects what it is worth when you sell it. These habits cost nothing and make every lot easier to price.

One bucket for carbide only

Place a labeled carbide-only container at each machine or tool crib station. Worn inserts, broken end mills and used drills go in the carbide bucket — never in the mixed steel or HSS bin. Contamination is the most common reason a lot gets downgraded, and separation at the machine is far easier than sorting a mixed barrel later.

Drain coolant and remove debris

Let coolant drain off tooling before it goes in the bucket, and keep out rags, packaging, loose steel shanks, broken holders and general shop trash. Clean, dry carbide photographs better, weighs accurately and evaluates faster. A quick shake-off at the machine is all it takes.

Protect unused and boxed tooling

New, unused or new-old-stock inserts and tooling may have resale value above scrap value — but only if the boxes, labels and coatings are intact. WHY IT MATTERS

Why tungsten carbide holds value even when worn out

Tungsten carbide tooling is manufactured from tungsten powder and a cobalt binder, sintered into one of the hardest materials used in machining. When an insert or end mill is worn past its cutting life, the tungsten content does not disappear — it can be recovered and recycled into new material. That recoverable content is what gives even fully worn tooling its scrap value.

Shops that treat carbide as a recoverable byproduct rather than trash turn a cost center into a small revenue stream. Weight and context

What carbide material do machine shops typically generate?

The most common items are used indexable inserts from turning and milling, worn solid carbide end mills and drills, carbide burrs, reamers, brazed tooling and saw tips, plus broken or chipped cutting tools. Shops also accumulate unused surplus inserts and new-old-stock tooling. Even fully worn tooling retains recoverable tungsten content, which is why shops collect it rather than discarding it.

Why should carbide be kept separate from high-speed steel?

Carbide and high-speed steel look similar to the untrained eye but are entirely different materials with different values. A lot mixed with HSS, regular steel or shop debris is harder to evaluate and will be priced lower to account for the sorting and contamination.
