TERMINOLOGY

Busway, bus duct and cable tray: know what you have.

"Bus duct" and "busway" describe the same family of equipment: a metal-enclosed power distribution system built around copper or aluminum bus bars. In the Chicago market the two terms are used interchangeably. Cable tray is the common look-alike — an open ladder or trough that supports pulled cable rather than carrying power itself. Tray and busway are often removed in the same project, so identifying which is which in your photos helps the review start in the right place.

Feeder busway

Feeder busway moves power from one point to another with few or no tap-off points: risers between floors, long straight runs across a plant, service-entrance distribution. The configuration is simple — straight sections, elbows and end closures — and takeouts are usually valued on footage, amperage and conductor metal.

Plug-in busway

Plug-in busway has outlet openings spaced along the housing where bus plugs attach to feed individual machines or zones. Factories, warehouses and data halls favor plug-in runs because loads can be added, moved or removed without new conduit. A takeout that includes dozens of fusible or breaker plug-in units is a different review than bare straight sections, so count the plugs and note their ratings when you submit.

EQUIPMENT DETAILS

The details that shape a busway review.

Two busway lots that look identical from across the room can review very differently. The nameplate and a few measurements usually tell the story. When you sell bus duct or busway, include as many of these as you can:

  • Manufacturer and series — Square D, Siemens, GE, Eaton/Cutler-Hammer, BullDog, I-T-E and others
  • Amperage rating per section, commonly 225A through 5000A
  • Voltage and system: 208V, 240V, 480V or 600V; 3-phase 3-wire or 4-wire
  • Conductor metal: copper or aluminum bus
  • Housing type: indoor (NEMA 1) or outdoor/feeder (NEMA 3R)
  • Straight-section lengths and total linear footage
  • Elbows, tees, crosses, reducers and end closures, with counts by type
  • Bus plugs: quantity, amperage, fusible or breaker type
  • Tap boxes, expansion fittings and hanger hardware
  • Condition: new surplus, clean takeout, or weathered
  • Status: still installed, already removed, or palletized

Both copper-conductor and aluminum-conductor busway are reviewed. What matters is identifying which you have, because it changes both the reuse market and the commodity fallback — a photo of the conductor ends or any legible markings usually settles it. Related distribution gear such as switchgear and transformers is often removed in the same project and can be submitted together.

If the labels are painted over, missing or unreadable, send what you have anyway. Overall dimensions, the number and spacing of plug-in openings, housing color and a photo of the conductor ends are often enough for a preliminary read, and Ironcrest will tell you exactly which markings would firm up the review. Where surplus busway comes from.

Busway rarely becomes surplus one piece at a time. It comes out in runs, rooms and buildings — which is exactly why a photo-first review works well. Typical sources include:

  • Plant and facility electricians — line removals and department reconfigurations

Before you send the inventory

Should bus duct be cut down before selling?

Not before review. Intact sections, labels and system information can matter, especially when compatible pieces have reuse value. Straight sections in standard lengths are easier to match to a reuse buyer than short cutoffs, so leave elbows, plugs and labels with the run they came from and send photos first — Ironcrest can advise whether cutting makes sense after the review.

What photos are most useful?

Photograph the overall run first, then close-ups of the manufacturer nameplate, amperage and voltage markings, and the conductor ends showing copper or aluminum. Add section lengths, connector ends, a count of plugs and fittings, and whether the material is installed, removed or palletized.

Can you review a full removed system?

Yes. A layout photo, approximate linear footage and a count of plugs and fittings establish the scope quickly. Larger systems may warrant an on-site look depending on location and quantity — send the photos and location first. Related equipment pulled in the same project, such as switchgear or panelboards, can be reviewed in the same submission.

What is the difference between plug-in and feeder busway?

Does the amperage rating affect value?

It can. Higher-amperage runs generally carry heavier conductors and see stronger reuse demand, but brand compatibility, completeness, condition and whether plugs are included matter as much as the number on the nameplate.
